Santha Ram..

What a bad news you gave me today early morning!!

I am in still a deep shock and in denial of this saddest news. Tears are rolling down and I am still crying as if my own "pedda nAnna" has passed away!!! As one of his great fans, it is getting uncontrollable for me to contain this sadness.

I am not sure what I shoud do to pay condolences to him today.. I am completely in a shock now. Pl. some suggest me what we should do on the behalf of this site. It took me almost 30 minutes to write a couple of lines on our home page now.

Hi folks,

Can you kindly take a few minutes and post here all the media coverage links about Sobhan Babu's death news and other related articles?

We will soon be coming up with a web site on this great hero and we would like to save all these news items in the new site.

Sobhan Babu amar rahE!!

Thanks in advance,

The below mail has been sent to me by another Sobhan's fan (Hemanth, NY, an younger brother of Jayant Paranji)..

+++++++++++++++++++

For 32 years he was my hero. I always wished I was as good looking & as attractive as him. He was a voracious reader, a good writer, a vocal philosopher, a silent philanthropist, a man with both foresight & hindsight, a great planner, a wonderful executor and a strict disciplinarian. I always wished I could have a mind like his.

It all started one day in January 1976 when I was watching Pichchi Maaraju (Sudarshan 70mm, Hyderabad). In the film he pretends to be a psychiatric patient and the audience doesn't know that until the scene just before the interval, when he calls the Police Commissioner & says, "Nenu CID officer Gopi sir. Radha hathya chesinatlu oppukundhi sir". The screen froze with the superimposition of the word Vishranthi. The lights went on but no one got out of their seats !!! The sudden plot point was too stunning !!! A few seconds later the 70 paisa ticketwalas started going beserk followed by the three ruppee fifty paisa walas. As a gullible 15-year old, that situation did impact me. For days I would go about enacting & re-enacting that sequence. A few weeks later Iddaru Iddare released and from then on I became a big fan of his.

In March of that year a charity cricket match was played between Telugu filmstars & Hindi filmstars. I paid thirty ruppees for a 'gallery seat' just to see him in flesh & blood ! There were two entertaining moments for me during that match. One was Sobhan Babu affectionately lifting Vanisri & 'cradling her' while the audience roared in reaction and the second one was when a couple of hindi heroines held his hand & refused to let go of him ! The most forgettable moment was when he was out caught by Shabana Azmi of a Saira Banu delivery to the very first ball he faced !!!

He was one of those who appealed both to the gandhi class & balcony class. He had an aura of elegance even while doing a mass role. He brought about a new way of acting to the telugu film industry called Casual Acting. He had no stereotypes in any of his portrayals, that's why till date - though many have tried - nobody has been successful in imitating him the way they imitate his three contemporaries. He could fit into any of the genres - mythological, folk, family & dishum-dishum.

He wrote a series called Nenu Naa Kathanayikalu (on his heroines) for a magazine called 'Screenplay', that's when I realised he was a good writer. On his 50th birthday, he wrote about his reflections in Vijaya Chitra (January 1987). Till date I haven't read an article of such high literary standards from any other actor. It was awesome. Even my dad, who still hates films & film culture, was appreciative of that.

He was most definitely instrumental in my coming to the media. What started off as an aspiration to become a hero like him, metamorphosed over the years into becoming a Television Producer. Though I was cut off from telugu films after moving north.....I did keep myself abreast about any information on him.

It was pure chance that made me come face to face with him. I was working for the News Dept of ITV (the Indian TV channel of New York). In June/July of 1992, the three day ATA function was being celebrated in Whiteplains, a town 30 miles north. I headed off for live coverage with my satellite truck. The moment was quite dramatic. I was taking an extremely slow close-up pan shot of the delegates & who do I see in my camera lens seated in the front row ??? Him !!! I couldn't believe my eyes & had to look up at him directly & again look down into the lens repeatedly to re-check. But by the time I finished the coverage & got to his seat to shake hands with him he was gone ! Then again in October of that year, just a few days after my marriage, Sadhana & I were returning from Madras after obtaining her H-4 visa & were seated in the front row B-Zone of the plane. After touching down at Begumpet, guess who walks out from behind the 1st class screen ??? Him again ! I was right up with him. It was a paradoxical moment for me. I wanted to shake hands but at the same time act 'cool' in front of my wife, but then I couldn't hide my feelings. Sadhana noticed it & asked why I was blushing ??? Another oppurtunity lost..........

When Movie Time Video opened in Flushing, New York, I scrambled to see all those films of his which I hadn't seen. And thanks to Atluri Srinivas of Telugucinema.com, I had my fill of info too. Off-late I've been a great patron of chimatamusic.com most of the time playing Sobhan's songs. A contributor called Parasakthi2003 has uploaded quite a few songs of his on youtube & I've never failed being a repeat audience to those.

Today, call it providence or some psychic connection, I was watching Paramaanandayya Sishyula Katha online (http://www.moviestelugu.tk) where Sobhan played the role of Lord Shiva (my favourite form of God). The scene that was playing when my phone rang was - NTR, who played the role of Nandi Vardhana maharaju in the film is worshipping a linga in bhooloka & the flowers are falling on Sobhan's (Lord Shiva's) feet in Kailasa. That's when Sumanth rang to tell the sad news ! That was followed by several other calls from my friends ! They know my Sobhan obsession, that's why apparently the first thought that came to their minds was my reaction.

My sadness cannot be described in words. After finishing work I drove 30 miles north of New York City to the Whiteplains auditorium & placed a bouquet of flowers on one of the front row chairs. The security guard politely asked me what it was all about. I told him that 14 years back my idol was seated on that chair & now he has passed on. While walking back to my car I couldn't hold back my tears.

Today, a part of me has died. The feeling is the same as I had felt on Februaru 20, 1983 & June 4, 2002........when I suffered personal tragedies.....It is going to take a long long time to sink in.....and an even more longer time to recover.

MAY SOBHAN'S SOUL REST IN PEACE
Hemanth Paranji

Shocking news! I came to know very late in the evening:(

వారి ఆత్మకు శాంతి చేకూరాలని భగవంతుని ప్రార్దిస్తూ,
వారి కుటుంబ సభ్యులకు నా ప్రగాఢ సంతాపం
