It is a happy coincidence that our beloved singer S.Janaki was born on the day the dramatist William Shakesphere was born: April 23. S.Janaki sang songs in our Telugu expressing a very wide range of emotions. Her full potential, however, was not realised in pre-Ilayaraja days.

She is well-known mostly for songs like ”Neeli Meghalalo…” (Bavamaradallu), “Neeleela Padeda Deva…” (Muripinche Muvvalu), and “Aadadani Vorachoopulo…” (Aaraadhana). Saluri Rajeswara Rao, while composing songs for B.N.Reddy’s classic Poojaphalam, allotted two songs for S.Janaki: “Madanaa Manassayeraa…” and “Sivadeekshaparu ralanura…”. On the insistence of B.N.Reddy he recorded the main song of that movie “Pagale Vennela..” in her voice which became a great hit.

One could find an echo of “Sivadeekshaparu ralanura…” in Sathyam’s composition “Siva Siva Anavelara…” in Bhaktha Kannappa. He exploited her voice in songs like “Gunna Mamidikomma meeda…”, “Edivilo Virisina Parijathamo…” and “Ramachiluka Pellikodukevare?”

It is Ilayaraja who made use of her voice to express emotions over a wide range commencing with “Paruvama Chilipi Parugu theeyaku..” in Mounaragam. It is significant that she could sings songs like “Dheera Dheera Magadheera …” (Oke Okkadu) at an advanced age under the baton of A.R Rahman.

We wish her a happy birthday and expect from her some more good songs.
